Ralf Lindner – Dog School “WIR2”

Ralf Lindner

For 12 years I have been training with humans and dogs. In all this time I have not found two people or two dogs that were exactly the same, and certainly not two completely alike human-dog-teams. Each dogs has its strengths, each human their weaknesses. And only very rarely it happens that human and dog interact as if they had been „made for each other“. Living with a dog is a constant interplay, including an amount of friction, complementing one another and a mutual willingness to cooperate.

Here, the dog has one advantage: He keenly observes the human, “reads” the human like a human would read a book – but more precisely. The dog reviews the observations und links them up to a solid “net“. A net of human behavior, within which the dog can move – not exactly like a spider, but a bit like it. Of course he waits for his chances and uses them, when they arise – just as we would do.

The task of the human (regarding the life with a dog) is to help with creating the net into a network of rules that satisfies all: human, dog and environment, i.e. the other people, the other dogs, the rabbits, the sheep, the joggers, the police etc.

People do not observe – we evaluate, assume and believe. This is our biggest mistake. Instead of watching what happens and being prepared with the necessary measures, we firstly ask: “Why does he do that?” But the answer to that question is basically always the same: Because he (the dog) has learned to do it like that!

If we would observe more and interpret less, we might achieve more, not only regarding dog training.
